Flu Clinic Sceduled for December 21st

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students:

We at Cape Cod Tech have been working with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, as well as the Barnstable County and Harwich health departments to reduce the spread of the flu, including the H1N1 virus strand. We want to keep Cape Cod Tech open to students and functioning in a normal manner during this year’s flu season; however, we need your help to make this happen.

In order to prepare our community in taking necessary actions, we have set a date for a school wide inoculation. Due to limited supply of the H1N1 Vaccine, that date is set for December 15, 2009. This page includes a permission slip to vaccinate your student from the H1N1 flu virus here at Cape Cod Regional Technical High School. We are disseminating and collecting the parental permission slips now for several reasons. This progress report mailing ensures that all parents and students will receive the information in a timely matter. It also allows Cape Cod Tech to take the necessary time to collect the permission slips. I have also informed the Harwich Department of Public Health that Cape Cod Tech could and would be ready within two days if they were to receive the shipment of vaccinations earlier than expected. Therefore, I ask that all parents return this form as soon as possible in the case that an earlier vaccination clinic could be held.
After completing the enclosed Permission Slip, please have students submit the form in the main office.
On November 17th, Cape Cod Tech will hold their monthly Parent Council Meeting. This meeting will include an informational session on the H1N1 Flu and Vaccination Clinic that will be held here at Cape Cod Tech on December 15th. I am asking that all parents attend so clear and accurate information can be shared in regards to this flu season.

We will continue to provide you with information throughout the year through mailings, letters sent home through students and electronic phone messages. Please visit our school website and click on the link Flu Information to gain more knowledge and precautionary procedures. For more information, you may also visit www.flu.gov or call 1-800-CDC-INFO.

Sincerely,

This web page includes The Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s Information for Parents about Flu in Schools. It can also be found on the School Nurse Page, making it easily accessible during the flu season. In order to be proactive and limit your student’s chance of contracting the flu, please:

Teach your student proper hygiene: Encourage them to wash their hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub, inform them to cover their coughs and sneezes with tissues, or when a tissue is not available to cough/sneeze into their elbow. If they cover with their hands, wash their hands immediately.

Inform your student not to share personal items: Keep drinks, water bottles, food or utensils to themselves. Please also recommend to them to limit their affection to others, i.e. do not hug/kiss their friends hello, put their arm around friends, and limit their intimate encounters if their significant other is ill.

Know the signs and symptoms of the flu: Symptoms of the flu include fever (100.4 Fahrenheit or greater) cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache and feeling tired. Vomiting and diarrhea also may be a symptom. Contact your local doctor for further direction.

Keep sick children at home for at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever without using fever reducing drugs. Keeping students at home will help reduce the number of people who may get infected.

Do not send children to school if they are sick. Any child who exhibits flu-like symptoms while at school will be sent home.
