Dental Assisting

  •

Students in the Dental Assisting Program complete training in the dental and health sciences, radiology, infection control, medical emergencies, and dental materials. They learn chairside dental assisting skills in general dentistry, and in the dental specialties including oral surgery, pediatric dentistry, and orthodontics. Throughout their education, they are able to practice the skills that they learn in the classroom on real patients at the Ellen Jones Dental Center. Here, students have a unique opportunity to work with a variety of dentists, hygienists, and Certified Dental Assistants, giving them experience and exposure to the latest technologies and techniques. During their senior year, students also do a five week internship with local dentists in the community where they are able to refine their skills in a private practice setting. Often, this experience results in employment.

The curriculum for the Dental Assisting Program is competency based requiring students to perform prescribed duties and tasks. The program’s performance tests require each student to achieve a high level of competency. The program stresses the academic integration of theory and practice. Academic preparation in the program focuses on preparing students to challenge national certification exams in Infection Control and Radiology. Students also challenge a state Dental Radiology exam and if they successfully pass that exam they are certified in Dental Radiography in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Successfully passing a radiology course and certification exam are legal requirements in Massachusetts for all dental assistants taking dental radiographs.
